I. 1. Read the article and say in 2-3 sentences what it is about.
If you belong to the older generation, Elderhostel is a good place to live.
Elderhostel, founded in 1975, is the world’s largest educational and travel organisation for older adults. Its aim is to excite people’s minds and enrich people’s lives promoting and encouraging different activities among the older generation. There are no examinations or marks. All that you need, in order to enroll on a programme, is enquiring mind* and an adventurous spirit. Also, of course, you need to believe that learning and discovery continue all your life. There are expert instructors and experienced group leaders for field trips and cultural excursions.
Elderhostel offers a large number of programmes in a huge variety of areas. Amongst other things, it provides simple, online information on activities and services. First of all, there are traditional programmes. Here, people study ancient history, literature, and art, and can learn about different cultures, modern people and issues.
Also, Elderhostel believes that physical activity helps people to keep a positive self-image and contributes to the sense of well-being both mental and physical. Many programmes have keep-fit equipment and a large number of social and cultural events take place there, as well as sporting activities. Regular physical activity can prevent many common illnesses, such as high blood pressure and asthma and it helps people who already have such illnesses. Alongside the usual sports like swimming, hockey and cricket, bowling and tennis, you will find “Dog Clubs” and “Flying Clubs”. Then there is a group of adventure programmes involving activities like hiking, kayaking*, biking and studying whales.
There are also programmes which give people the chance to help communities in different ways, such as protecting endangered species, tutoring school children and building affordable housing.
Finally, there are programmes which take place aboard a boat, anywhere from Antarctic to the Mississippi River.
The word ‘old’ has a very different and very positive meaning in Elderhostel!

Script
Speaker 1: The first time I saw Terry was at a local dance when I was 17. Oh, he was so handsome in those days! I remember I was standing with my best friend Vera Mills and Terry walked towards us. Well, I thought he was going to ask Vera to dance — she was the type that men would cross a dance floor for. I was so surprised when he asked me instead. We dated for two years but Terry was quite shy really, so I was the one who asked him to marry me. Thank goodness he said “Yes” or I don’t know what I would have done.
Speaker 2: Cathy and I grew up in the same neighbourhood in Birmingham, but we didn’t actually meet until we were teenagers. Funny really, living so close all that time. We met in a lift at the Town Hall. I was only going to the first floor, but I stayed with her all the way to the sixth just to talk to her. We went out that night and I asked her to marry me a month later.
Speaker 3: I thought Amy was awful the first time we met. She was introduced to me by a friend. Tim Green was his name. Anyway, she practically ignored me and she spent all night chatting and laughing with Tim. I met up with her again a few months later at a charity dinner and we got on a lot better that time. We got married on St. Valentine’s Day.

possible response
1) No doubt that school is our second home. We spend a lot of time at school getting deep knowledge, which can help us to understand our life better. The school where I study is situated not far from my house. It is a three-storeyed building of typical design. It was built in 1965. My school provides eleven years of education which offers a general course of academic and non-academic subjects. Besides it offers a number of courses giving a profound knowledge in a variety of fields: humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, etc.
I`m absolutely sure that a teacher plays an important role in our education. I think that I`m lucky because all my teachers are very experienced and knowledgeable. Most of my teachers understand the difficulties of learning process very well. They help us to learn and advise us on all aspects of our life. They share their knowledge and experience with us . They support us and take care of us. That`s why I`m happy at school and so are my classmates.
It is also a place where I make new friends. At school we can enjoy different cultural activities and show our individual talents. Everyone has an opportunity to join a school club or to take part in sport contests. I can say that social life is of great importance for pupils, and in our school it is well-organized. We have a lot of parties, competitions and excursions.
Extra-curricular activities help us in our education and relationship with our classmates. I usually get on well with my teachers and my classmates. I am sure that school years will be the happiest time in my life and I will never forget these years.
